What is Udyam

The official identity for India's MSMEs

Udyam Registration is the process through which any Micro, Small or Medium Enterprise formally registers itself under the Ministry of MSME, Government of India. Previously known as Udyog Aadhaar, it was revamped in July 2020 to make the entire flow completely digital and self-declared.

On approval you receive a permanent Udyam Registration Number (URN) and an e-certificate. Registration is 100% online, paperless and free of government charges — details are verified automatically through Aadhaar, PAN and GST databases. The certificate never expires, though you should keep your financial data updated each year so your classification stays accurate.

MSME Classification

Are you Micro, Small or Medium?

From 1 April 2025, the Government revised the MSME thresholds upward — raising investment limits by 2.5× and turnover limits by 2×. Classification uses a composite criterion: both investment in plant, machinery or equipment and annual turnover.

Category Investment in plant & machinery / equipment Annual turnover
Micro Enterprise Up to ₹2.5 crore Up to ₹10 crore
Small Enterprise Up to ₹25 crore Up to ₹100 crore
Medium Enterprise Up to ₹125 crore Up to ₹500 crore

The same limits apply equally to manufacturing and service enterprises. If a business crosses a threshold, it keeps its existing category until the end of the financial year, giving you room to grow without an abrupt loss of benefits.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The questions business owners ask us most often about Udyam / MSME registration.

What is Udyam Registration?
It's the Government of India's official process for registering a business as a Micro, Small or Medium Enterprise (MSME). It replaced the older Udyog Aadhaar system in July 2020 and issues a permanent Udyam Registration Number (URN) plus an e-certificate.
Is Udyam Registration mandatory?
It isn't mandatory by statute, but it's the only way to claim MSME benefits — priority lending, the 25% procurement reservation and delayed-payment protection. A qualifying business that skips it simply loses access to those benefits.
How much does it cost?
The Udyam portal charges no government fee — registration is free. Any amount we charge is a professional service fee for accurate filing and advisory. Be cautious of sites that demand inflated "government fees."
What are the current MSME limits?
Effective 1 April 2025: Micro — investment up to ₹2.5 crore and turnover up to ₹10 crore; Small — up to ₹25 crore and ₹100 crore; Medium — up to ₹125 crore and ₹500 crore. Classification uses both investment and turnover together.
What documents do I need?
Just details — no uploads. You'll need Aadhaar and PAN (mandatory), GSTIN if applicable, bank details, and your investment/turnover and activity information. Everything is verified automatically through government databases.
Do I need GST for Udyam?
Not always. GSTIN is required only where GST is applicable to your business. Informal micro-units without GSTIN can register via the Udyam Assist Platform (UAP).
How long does it take?
It's fast — most registrations are completed within a single working day once your details are confirmed and Aadhaar OTP verification is done.
Does the certificate expire?
No. The Udyam certificate is valid for the lifetime of the enterprise with no renewal. You should, however, update your financial data each year so your classification remains accurate.
I have an old Udyog Aadhaar (UAM) — what now?
Existing UAM holders should migrate to Udyam through the same portal. We handle the migration and any corrections needed during the process.
What is the delayed-payment protection?
Under Section 15 of the MSMED Act, 2006, a buyer must pay an MSME supplier within 45 days of accepting goods or services. If they don't, interest accrues and the supplier can take the claim to the Micro & Small Enterprises Facilitation Council for recovery.
