What is an AYUSH license?
It's the license required to manufacture, sell, retail, wholesale or export
products under Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani or Homeopathy. National policy is set by the Ministry of
AYUSH, while State Licensing Authorities grant the licenses.
What are the main types of AYUSH license?
The key ones are the manufacturing license (Form 25-D) for businesses with their
own unit, the loan license (Form 25-E) for brands using a third-party GMP unit, and the retail
license for selling AYUSH products. There are separate provisions for Homeopathy.
What is a loan license?
A loan license lets you build and sell a brand without owning a factory —
your products are made by a GMP-accredited third-party manufacturer and approved by the
authority. It's a popular route for new herbal brands.
What is Schedule T?
Schedule T of the Drugs & Cosmetics Act prescribes Good Manufacturing
Practices for Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani drugs — covering hygienic premises, plant and
machinery layout, laboratory facilities, process documentation and quality control.
What technical staff do I need?
A manufacturing unit generally needs qualified technical staff — an
Ayurvedic/Unani practitioner (BAMS/BUMS) and/or a pharmacist — depending on the system of
medicine and your state's requirements.
Who issues the license?
The State Licensing Authority (often the State Drugs Controller / AYUSH department)
issues manufacturing and sale licenses, inspects facilities and enforces compliance. The
Ministry of AYUSH sets the national standards.
Do I need a separate license for each system?
Generally yes — Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and Homeopathy are covered by their
own provisions and product approvals. We confirm exactly what your product range requires.
Do I need FSSAI as well?
Often yes, if your products carry food or nutraceutical claims (health drinks,
supplements, etc.), since those fall under food law. We can arrange the FSSAI registration
alongside your AYUSH license.
Can I sell AYUSH products without manufacturing them?
Yes — you can take an AYUSH retail/wholesale license to sell products, or a
loan license to own a brand made by a third party, without setting up your own manufacturing
unit.
What if I sell without a license?
It is illegal to manufacture, sell or distribute AYUSH products without a valid
license. Doing so attracts penalties under the Drugs & Cosmetics Act and the risk of seizure
of stock.
